Why “simple things to draw” actually helps (especially on low-energy days)

Sometimes I want to draw… but my brain wants to nap 😅 So I keep a little “simple things to draw” list for those moments when I don’t want to plan a whole artwork. Tiny doodles are perfect for building confidence, filling sketchbook pages, and warming up your hand before you try anything harder.

And yes—simple can still be super cute. Think: bunnies, dinos, penguins, kitty faces, butterflies, tiny ghosts, and even a spider web. These are the kinds of easy drawing ideas that look adorable even if your lines are a little wobbly (mine always are at first).

Quick art warm-up (do this before you judge your drawing)

If your first doodle comes out looking “meh,” it might not be your skill—it might just be that your hand is cold and stiff. Warming up makes a huge difference ✍️

My 3-minute warm-up:

1) Draw a page of loose circles (big, medium, tiny). Don’t aim for perfect.

2) Add a page of curved lines: S-shapes, waves, little rainbows.

3) Do a few “pressure lines”: light-to-dark strokes, then dark-to-light.

After this, even the simplest doodles start looking cleaner and cuter.

10 cute, easy doodles to try (simple things to draw when you’re bored)

I like keeping these as go-to prompts. Pick one, draw it 3 times, and on the third one add a tiny twist (a bow, blush cheeks, a pattern, a theme color). That’s how simple doodles turn into your style 🥰

1) A cute bunny (the easiest version)

Start with a rounded head (almost a circle). Add two long ears like soft leaves. Dot eyes, tiny nose, and a little “w” mouth. If you want instant cuteness: add cheek blush (two small circles) and a tiny sparkle in each eye.

Extra easy upgrade: draw the bunny holding a small heart or a carrot.

2) Another bunny (but different vibes)

This one is for when you want variety without thinking too hard. Make the head slightly oval, ears shorter, and add bangs (just 3 curved lines). Suddenly it looks like a different character.

Tip: changing ear shape changes the whole mood—pointy ears feel energetic, round ears feel soft.

3) Dino doodle (friendly, not scary)

Dinos are secretly one of the best simple things to draw because they’re basically: a bean shape + tail + spikes 😄

Draw a chunky bean body, add a small head bump, then a long tail. Put little triangle spikes on the back (or make them rounded for a “baby dino” look). Tiny arms = two short lines. Done.

Make it cuter by adding a big eye and a tiny smile.

4) Penguin (tiny oval magic)

Penguins are beginner-friendly because they’re mostly ovals. Draw a tall oval body, then a smaller oval belly inside. Add two flippers like curved leaves on the sides. A small beak triangle and dot eyes finish it.

Optional: add a scarf—scarves make every doodle look intentional 😅

5) Kitty face (fastest win)

When I want a quick confidence boost, I draw kitty faces. Circle head, two triangle ears, dot eyes, tiny nose, and whiskers. That’s it.

If you want to practice expression without complexity, change only one thing each time:

• sleepy eyes (curved lines)

• surprised eyes (bigger circles)

• grumpy brows (two angled lines)

6) Butterfly (symmetry practice without stress)

Butterflies look fancy but they’re actually simple. Draw a small vertical body (like a grain of rice). Then draw two big wing loops on top and two smaller loops on the bottom.

To decorate: add dots, stripes, or tiny heart shapes inside the wings. Keep it simple—patterns do the heavy lifting.

7) A cute little ghost (my favorite “I’m tired” doodle)

Ghosts are basically a jellybean with a wavy bottom. Draw a rounded top, then make the bottom edge like soft waves. Add two eyes and a tiny mouth.

Want it extra cute? Give it rosy cheeks and make the mouth a small “o” like it’s saying “oh!”

8) Spider web (oddly relaxing)

This is one of those doodles that feels calming because it’s repetitive. Start with a small “X” (two crossing lines). Add two more lines to make it like a starburst. Then connect the lines with curved arcs, working outward.

If you’re filling a sketchbook corner, spider webs are perfect because they fit into triangles and edges nicely.

9) Cherries (tiny fruit, big payoff)

Cherries are a classic sketchbook idea: two circles side by side, stems that meet at the top, and one leaf. You can shade one side of each cherry to make it look instantly more “finished.”

If you want a mini challenge, draw a whole page of cherries in different sizes.

10) Blueberries (collage-style page)

Instead of drawing one blueberry, try a collage page: a cluster of circles, then add extra parts like leaves, little blossoms, and tiny branches. It looks detailed, but it’s still just circles + simple leaf shapes.

This is a great “simple drawing idea” when you want your page to look full without drawing complicated subjects.

6 sketchbook page ideas (when one doodle isn’t enough)

Sometimes I don’t want one drawing—I want a whole page that looks satisfying. These are my favorite easy sketchbook prompts that turn simple things to draw into a complete layout.

1) “One thing is different” page

Fill a page with similar small doodles (like 20 stars, 20 hearts, or 20 fish). Then draw one that’s different (a different color, different pattern, or a totally different object). It’s simple but looks super intentional.

2) Floral doodles page (repeat one tiny flower)

Pick one micro flower doodle—like a 5-petal bloom—and repeat it across the page. Add leaves in between. Repetition makes it look like a design, not “random doodles.”

3) Grid “blue tiles” idea (a box of tiny prompts)

Draw a grid (like 3x3, 4x4, or even messy uneven boxes). In each box, draw a different easy doodle: a star, a smiley, a leaf, a tiny ghost, a heart, a mini planet, etc.

This is perfect if you get bored fast and want variety.

4) Patterned paradise (wallpaper-style page)

Choose 3–5 simple objects (for example: cherries, bows, clouds, butterflies, stars). Scatter them around the page, then connect the empty spaces with tiny dots or sparkles.

It gives “cute stationery” vibes without needing advanced drawing skills.

5) Fruit theme page (pick your favorite fruit)

Cherries, blueberries, strawberries, oranges—any fruit works. Draw the fruit whole, sliced, and as tiny icons. Add leaves and little seeds as texture. This is one of the easiest ways to make a page look cohesive.

6) Color-limited doodle challenge

Pick one main color (like blue) and do a full page using only that color plus black/gray. Even the simplest doodles look more “put together” when the palette is limited.

Mini tutorial: how I doodle a cow (super cute + beginner-friendly)

This is a step-by-step cow doodle that stays simple but still has personality. I like doing themed versions (like a lemonade vibe, pastel vibe, or strawberry vibe) 🍋

Step 1: Start with a circular shape for the head.

Step 2: Draw two hook-shaped lines facing each other (these help place the muzzle area).

Step 3: Connect them with a curved line, then add a curved line through the middle of each “hook.”

Step 4: Make two half circles on the sides (cheeks/muzzle edges).

Step 5: Add two curved lines to shape the muzzle.

Step 6: Draw two almond shapes near the top for spots or eye areas (you can decide the style).

Step 7: Add two curved triangles above for ears.

Step 8: Draw a curved line across the lower part of the head to finish the face shape.

Step 9: Add eyes, nostrils, a mouth, and decorate with spots.

If your cow looks a little “off” the first time, redraw it right next to it—second try is always cuter. Third try is where it starts looking like “your” cow.

How to make simple doodles look better (without making them harder)

I’m obsessed with tiny upgrades that don’t require extra skill, just extra intention.

1) Add a shadow line
Pick one side (usually bottom-right) and add a tiny shadow under the doodle. Instant depth.

2) Use consistent line weight
If your outline is darker than your details, everything looks cleaner.

3) Repeat one motif
If you draw a bunny once, draw it again as a sticker set: bunny + carrot + heart + star.

4) Fill awkward empty space
Sparkles, dots, tiny stars, mini hearts—these are the “glue” of doodle pages.

Little note on inspiration & credit (because it matters)

I love using simple doodle prompts as inspiration, and it’s totally okay to practice from references. But please don’t screenshot someone’s sketchbook or drawings and claim them as your own. It’s discouraging, and it makes artists not want to share. If you recreate something for practice, keep it personal—or add your own twist so it becomes your version.
